Buddle Findlay is a large commercial law firm that operates throughout New Zealand. Founded in Wellington in 1982, the firm grew out of the merger of two Wellington law firms, Buddle Anderson Kent & Co and Findlay Hoggard Richmond & Co.

In 1895 the Wellington firm of Buller & Anderson was founded, shortly thereafter in 1899 Findlay Dalziell & Co was founded. Buller & Anderson became Buddle Anderson Kent & Co following a series of mergers, while Findlay Dalziell & Co would eventually become Findlay Hoggard Richmond & Co. In 1982 the two firms merged to form Buddle Findlay. Four years later, the firm established an Auckland office through a merger with Malloy Moody & Greville, and a partial merger with Holmden Horrocks & Co. Through a merger with Christchurch firm Brookman Stock in 1989, the firm's Christchurch office was opened.[1]

The Legal 500 lists Buddle Findlay as a top tier firm in the areas of restructuring and insolvency, and project and resource management. In banking & finance, corporate mergers & acquisitions, dispute resolution, employment, intellectual property, real estate and construction, and tax Buddle Findlay is considered a second tier firm (placing it in the top 8 - 10 law firms operating in those areas).[3]
Buddle Findlay is the principle sponsor of the Buddle Findlay Sargeson Fellowship, a fellowship run by the Frank Sargeson Trust and Auckland University which enables a published New Zealand writer to write full-time in residence at the Sargeson Centre in Auckland. While in residence the writer receives a $40,000 NZD stipend. The fellows in 2011 are fiction writer Sue Orr, and journalist Mark Broatch; each will spend five months in residence at the Sargeson Centre and receive a $20,000 NZD grant.[4]
Buddle Findlay also sponsors the Buddle Findlay Negotiation Competition, an undergraduate law student competition in which teams of two students represent a client in the negotiation of a transaction or dispute resolution. The competition is held at each university, and the winning teams from each region go on to compete at the NZLSA national conference, as well as at the ALSA national conference in Australia.
